C'est pas facile
le 5-16 octobre
When one has few connections in a new locale, it is necessary to be able to rely on some resources. Unfortunately these resources were a bit far and few between at times. I had use of the internet and a phone book when I was staying at the Pagés, though I kind of dithered about, not knowing what exactly I needed to look for.
After I moved into the other place, I lacked a working phone, phone book, a form of transportation and a computer monitor. I spent 3 days walking senselessly around a 45 minute radius of my house looking around for any of these items. Not so easy when you don't know where to look.
The monitor, I got first. Thanks to my roommate Narsil, we found a Samsung flat-screen at Future Shop. After setting up my computer in the kitchen (no desk yet), I found where to buy my bus pass. Apparently you need to buy a photo ID (only at select stores), even for a general admission. That seems silly to me, and worse yet it cost $6.75 plus the general cost of $65. It sucks being a jobless non-student...
My phone, which was having dialing issues, got replaced after I tried for 5 minutes to explain it to Étienne, my landlord, as well as the husband and father of the family living upstairs. Nobody seems to know where to pick up a phone book, so I was out of luck. Fortunately, the new ones arrived at the doorstep 4 days ago. This meant that I was able to pick up the old volume. Hooray! No more Oriental food withdrawal, but that's for another post.
